Square Footage Calculator | Instantly Measure Area Online
Square Footage Calculator
Are you building a house? Renovating a room? Or want to buy material for flooring and painting? The first question that comes is - "How much square feet area is there and how much material will be required?" To make this easier, I have created this square footage calculator. Let us see how to use it.
Step 1: Select your shape
First of all you have to click on the "Shape" dropdown. Here you will get four options:
Rectangle / Square: This is the most common shape. Most of the rooms, halls, bedrooms are rectangular or square. If all four walls of your room are straight and there are four corners, then select this.
Triangle (Base & Height): Sometimes there are triangular spaces in the house – like the area under the stairs or the corner of the attic. Use this option for this.
Circle: If your area is round – such as a round garden patch, round pool deck, or circular patio.
Trapezoid: This is a bit uncommon but some rooms are shaped like this - as if two parallel walls are of different lengths. For now let's say you select "Rectangle / Square" because it is most commonly used.
Step 2: Enter The Length
You can go to the “Length” section on the left side of the calculator. Here you need to do two things:
First: Measure the length of your room or area with a tape measure. Suppose the length of your bedroom is 15 feet, then type "15" in the box.
Second: Select the unit - "ft" or if measured in meters.
Step 3: Enter Width
Now go to the "Width" section on the right side. Just like that:
First: Measure the width of your room. If 12 feet, enter "12".
Second: Check the unit that "ft" is selected for.
Keep in mind that both length and width must be in the same unit! If the length is in feet, then enter the width in feet only, not in meters. Otherwise the calculation will be wrong.
Step 4: Price per Square Foot (Optional)
This field is optional, but very useful! If you just want to know the area, leave this blank. But if material cost is also to be calculated, then enter the rate per square foot here.
For example: Flooring: If you are having laminate flooring installed which is $3.50 per square foot, enter "3.50".
Tiles: Tiles for the kitchen are $5 per square foot? So type "5".
Carpet: Carpet for the bedroom is $2.75 per square foot? Just enter "2.75".
Paint: You can add that data in the form of square foot. If it's $0.50 per square foot, you can enter that.
If the dollar sign ($) is already there, just enter the number.
Step 5: Press the "Calculate" button
Now just click on the big green button that says "CALCULATE". And it is done!
You will get two things:
Total Square Footage - What is your area? Total Cost - If you entered a price, the total cost
Press the clear button to clean the input field you entered.
Shape: Rectangle
Length: 14 ft
Width: 12 ft
Price: 6.00
Result: 168 square feet, total cost = $1,008
Example 2 – Living Room Carpet: Your living room is 20 ft × 15 ft. Carpet is $4.25 per square foot.
Shape: Rectangle
Length: 20 ft
Width: 15 ft
Price: 4.25 Result: 300 square feet, total cost = $1,275
Example 3 – Round Patio: You want to make a round patio in your backyard, whose diameter is 10 feet. Pavers are $8 per square foot.
Shape: Circle
Diameter/Radius: (Whatever option comes)
Price: 8.00
Tips
Be sure to buy extra material: Whatever result you get, add 10-15% extra to it. For Cutting, Waste, and Mistakes. If 200 square feet is required, then take 220-230 square feet of material.
Multiple Rooms: If flooring of the entire house is to be done, then calculate each room separately and then add them. The kitchen is separate, the bedroom is separate, and the hall is separate. Irregular shapes: If your room is L-shaped, break it into two rectangles. Calculate both separately and then add.
Confirm with the contractor: This calculator gives you a good estimate, but finally check with the contractor or the store.
That is all! Now you can easily calculate square footage and cost for any project. This tool makes home improvement projects a lot easier!
