Step 2: How Many Miles Did You Run?

Now let me give you a real example. Last Sunday I went for a walk with my friend in his new Tesla. We left the house in the morning, went around the whole city, and came back in the evening. The odometer of his car was telling us that we travelled 120 miles.

So, you will put this number in the box "Distance travelled." Let me tell you, there is a very good thing here - You can put the number in both Miles or Km! You can choose whatever you feel comfortable with. I suggest Miles because all road signs are in Miles.

Step 3: Calculating the Energy

Now this part may look a little tricky, but let me make it easier. The dashboard of your electric car is a display that tells you how much electricity you used. This happens in kWh.

In my friend's Tesla, we saw that the dashboard was showing 40 kWh after driving 120 miles. So, I have written 40 in the box Energy Used. Simple! If you are having trouble finding this number, I would suggest you do a manual check of your car or check the receipt of the charging station. 

I've learned that every car displays this information in a slightly different way. In some cars it is on the center screen, in some you have to go to the settings.

Step 4: Enter the Price of Electricity 

Now let me tell you a very important thing. This field is written as "optional," but I strongly recommend viewing the report.

Your Miles Per kWh Efficiency: I think this is the most important number. My friend's Tesla ran 120 miles and used 40 kWh, so the calculator said 3.0 miles per kWh. Let me tell you, if you're getting 3 or more, that's pretty good efficiency! 

The cost of your trip: Now here's my favorite part. Calculator reported that he spent just $6 on the entire 120-mile trip! I'm telling the truth, I can't believe it! It would have cost me 8-20 to drive the same distance in my petrol car. Can you imagine the difference?

Let's Talk About Charging

Let me give you an insider tip. I have compared the prices of different charging stations. Charging at home is the most economical... I need about $0.12-0.15 per kWh. On public fast chargers? Sometimes they charge up to $0.40-0.50 per kWh!
